Liceul Teoretic "Sfanta Maria",Galati is located in the S-E part of Romania, an economically disadvantaged region due to the lack of proper employment opportunities, our county being among the first three counties in the country with the biggest unemployment rate. In our school there are many students coming from socio-economically disadvantaged families with unemployed parents.A quarter of our students come from rural areas or from families with migrant parents and quite a few of them have the tendency to quit school because of financial problems and feelings of exclusion. Our institution provides general and vocational formal education, but also evening courses and long distance for adults who haven't completed their secondary studies.
Our motivation is to participate in cooperative projects and cultural exchanges at European level in order to promote the intercultural collaboration and the civic European conscience, the image of our school and Romanian education within Europe, help European Union member states identify and meet/know the Romanian reality, make friends, improve our school management and share experience in teaching and dealing with different situations. We are highly motivated to take part in this particular project because infant obesity has incresed by 18% in Romania during the last 10 years and now 40% of the Romanian children are overweight according to a recent poll of the Ministry of Public Health. Having the experience of a previous project (To Eat or not to Eat with E-s) we know that only through education can we hope to change mentalities for our students as well as parents. Our main objective is to make students and staff participate actively in civic life, displaying solidarity and interest in solving problems affecting the local, but also the wider community. This fosters the feeling of belonging to one's locality, country, but most importantly to the wider European Community, encouraging the sense of responsibility, of tolerance and respect for shared values as well as for the differences between value systems, religions or ethnic groups. We believe nowadays school education is greatly challenged and teachers, must continuously adjust to students' is important for the policy of the educative staff to find new ways of developing links with other countries and enrich both the students' and the teachers' cultural knowledge, to promote diversity, communication and intercultural activities to be able to face the new society.
